Paul Calzada
Mr. Calzada is a proud Texan and native Houstonian. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology, earning the Texas Academic Honors Award, a prestigious five-year full scholarship.
After graduation, Mr. Calzada worked in the mental health field as a Psychiatric Technician and Family Crisis Intervention Specialist for MHMR of Tarrant County, where he maintained his status as a Qualified Mental Health Professional.
In 2000, Mr. Calzada enrolled at the University of Houston Law Center. While still a student, he took and passed the February 2003 Texas Bar Exam, becoming a licensed attorney upon graduating in May 2003.
During law school, Mr. Calzada held several leadership positions. He was elected Vice President of the Student Bar Association, served as Treasurer of the Hispanic Law Students Association, and chaired the Aspiring Youth Committee from 2000 to 2002. Additionally, he was selected for both the Mock Trial and Moot Court Teams, earning recognition as a 2002 Hippard Mock Trial Semi-Finalist.
Mr. Calzada’s leadership and service were further recognized with the ExxonMobil Leadership Award in 2001 and the Dean’s Scholarship for Public Interest Work in 2002. During the summer of 2002, he interned at Lone Star Legal Aid, providing legal assistance to low-income clients in civil matters.
After graduating from law school, Mr. Calzada joined a Houston medical malpractice defense firm, where he gained valuable civil trial experience and developed a deeper understanding of the human impact of litigation. He later worked at Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA), a nonprofit law firm dedicated to representing survivors of domestic violence.
In 2006, Mr. Calzada established his private practice, where he managed all aspects of his cases. Drawing on his academic background in psychology, his experience in family crisis intervention, and his legal expertise in civil and family law, he provided compassionate and effective counsel to his clients. His dedication to excellence earned him recognition as a Texas Super Lawyers Rising Star in Family Law for 2014 and 2015, as well as inclusion in Houstonia Magazine’s Top Lawyers of 2015 and H Texas Magazine’s Top Lawyers from 2016 to 2019. In addition to his own practice, Mr. Calzada was also “Of Counsel” for many local family law attorneys who relied on his litigation experience to help them represent their clients in court.
Mr. Calzada resides in the Montrose area with his wife, Maria, and their two children. Maria, his high school sweetheart, is a Physician Assistant at an infectious disease medical practice, board member of the Texas Exes – Houston Chapter, former Volunteer of the Year for Houston Pride Parade, and past PTO president of our children’s elementary and high schools. Their son, who achieved a perfect score of 1600 on the SAT, is pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering in the Honors College at The University of Houston. Their daughter attends a top-ranked high school, where she is active in art, cross-country, and sartorial excellence.
